Your conclusion that larger hybrids won't save as much gas is incorrect in my opinion. The larger vehicles use more gas because of their higher mass, so there is more savings to be had. Large and heavy hybrids can be designed, they are just not common in passenger/private vehicles; probably because manufacturers pursued BEVs instead.
