Congress provided $7.5B for electric vehicle chargers. Built so far: Zero.By fast chargers I assume they mean 250 kW each? Newest V4 generation of superchargers are reported at up to 350 kW, and Mercedes is up to 400 kW. Anyway, if plan is to add 182,000 fast chargers along Interstates, and if each requires at least 250 kW, is it any wonder it takes time? The amount of electrical power is extremely high, and it takes time to get it to where it's needed. The article mentions 1.2 million total public chargers, and I'm curious what speed they are referring to when not fast chargers.
I expect small communities between large cities along Interstate highways where chargers are needed most do not have that much excess power, and it takes a lot of time to design, approve and build needed infrastructure to power superchargers. Each station could easily require many megawatts of electricity. We should be patient, though I'm not sure where all the power generation will come from during peak periods.Tue, 05 Dec 2023 15:29:14 +0000
