Switching or trading one type of energy for another only saves the difference between them, it does not eliminate the consumption. Reducing consumption at point of use can be as effective or more so. Obviously if we traded gasoline cars for EVs fueled from nuclear or renewable energy, then overall transportation efficiency wouldn't matter much.
