Motor Trend 2023 Truck of the YearEurope hasn't made a good decision regarding automobiles in decades. "Stupid laws" is being extremely charitable. They think EVs are the end all, be all and they just aren't. They have their place but their practical application is far less than what they want it to be, hence the mandates.
It also helps that Europe as a whole has a more comprehensive public transport network. In my metro area they are trying to build light rail but it's completely pointless. All it is is a place for the homeless to pass out, people to do drugs, and for assaults to take place. Every time one of these trains goes by it has a handful of people in it. But they spent billions putting it in and ruined busy streets in the process. It's a boondoggle.
That is flatly untrue. Right now, ICE is paying for all these EVs. You think there would be any EVs at Ford or any continues development if it wasn't for ICE? It costs Ford $25,000 MORE to simply build a Mach E than it does a comparable Edge. Do you think that is sustainable? The Lightning saw a nearly $20k rise in price from one model year to the next. Do you think that is sustainable?
Just because EVs have their exhaust pipe at a power plant doesn't mean they are some savior of the planet. The goal is to reduce the use of petroleum and reduce emissions right? Then the logic follows that automakers should be focusing heavily on vehicles that appeal to the largest portion of the market and would actually have an impact. And that's a PHEV. Again, all of the benefits of ICE and an EV with none of the downsides.
This current push for EVs "right here, right now" is not driven by a desire to save the planet (as the planet doesn't need saving) its political.
If you put a Mach E and an Escape PHEV next to each other and educate, without bias, the pros and cons of each, the Escape will be chosen darn near every time. PHEVs just make sense. Current EVs do not.Thu, 05 Jan 2023 10:03:16 +0000
