clutch pedal problem

I pushed the pedal down, felt/heard a click, clutch would not engage fully(slipping) finally went to working properly, couple days later did it again. Pressed pedal, felt like something under the pedal, forced to the floor, working OK again....Has anyone had, or know what the problem is.
1996 Ford Ranger 3.0.. 5sp
